P8 Investment

About the P8 Group Members of a collaboratory

The Prince of Wales’s P8 Group brings together senior officials from leading public pension funds to develop actions relating to global issues and particularly climate change. This group collectively stewards over $3 trillion dollars; and leads a peer group of managers of what may be the most focused capital in the world. The funds share a long-term investment horizon, and by virtue of their scale and mandates are permanently exposed to the economic and human health consequences inevitably imposed by climate change.

P8 Summits

On November 5–6 2007, July 15–16 2008, March 25–27 2009, October 26–27 2009 and February 8–9 2011, with the generous support of The Nand & Jeet Khemka Foundation, Zennstrom Philanthropies and the Shell Foundation, CPSL brought together leaders from the world's leading public pension funds and sovereign wealth funds with key experts at the P8 annual meetings, the P8 Summit ('Pensions 8'), to advance investment strategies to address climate change. The World Bank Group hosted the March 2009 Summit while HRH The Prince of Wales hosted the others.

The First P80 Summit

On June 16–18 2010, the first P80 Summit was hosted by the National Pension Service of Korea. This Summit brought together pension funds from the P8 Group with their counterparts from across Asia. Supported by Asian Development Bank, the Summit explored new investment opportunities in climate solutions across Asia.

The P8 Summits were a critical part in getting pension funds to lead in the move toward climate change action. Participants agreed to continue working together to address climate change, both within their organisations and as a group to influence policy and markets. The aim of the members of the P8 Group is to build on their existing activities in the area of climate change by bringing together global representation from the sector to help to catalyse opportunities for further investment and to support the removal of barriers to large-scale capital deployment. By focusing on developing opportunities for investments into climate solutions, the P8 aim to develop a momentum in the capital markets towards these investments.

The following organisations have attended P8 Summits:

North America: British Columbia (Canada), CalPERS, CalSTRS, New York State
Europe: AP7 (Sweden), APG (Netherlands), Norway, USS (UK) and ATP (Denmark)
Asia and Australia: ACSI (Australia), National Pension Service (Korea) and two further funds

The Finance Sector and its Role in Sustainability

The report 'Catalysing low carbon growth in developing economies' published by the P8 Group, ClimateWise, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and partners, explores how public finance mechanisms could scale up private sector investment to support low carbon growth in developing countries. The report was launched at the 2009 Global Roundtable of the UNEP Finance Initiative.
