Professional Services Sustainability Initiative (PSSI)

About the Professional Services Sustainability Initiative (PSSI)

The PSSI closed in October 2013.

Professional Services Sustainability Initiative

The Initiative brought together business leaders from seven professional services firms in the UK who believed there was an urgent need to develop new and longer term policies and approaches for tackling sustainability challenges.

Professional service firms play a pivotal role in today’s global economy, providing confidence to capital markets and enhancing the quality of corporate management and performance. The members of the PSSI were keenly aware of their social and environmental responsibilities as well as the opportunity to contribute to a strong, stable and sustainable economy – one that operates within environmental limits and ensures a strong, healthy and just society.

Through their advisory, assurance, consultancy and other services, and the effective management and positive example of their own operations, professional service firms have the potential to:

  • Enhance their own positive impact and help to shape more sustainable supply chains
  • Inform and influence clients, policy-makers and other decision makers in support of sustainability

The PSSI Principles

The PSSI Principles, launched in 2010, represented the members’ collective commitment to take action in support of sustainability on an ongoing basis. The Principles were reinforced by the actions of each of the group’s members, and by a collaborative action-oriented work programme to tackle priority issues for each of the Principles.

Measuring, managing and reducing GHG emissions from internal air travel

The group commissioned a guide from the University of Cambridge on the reduction of GHG emissions from internal air travel. Measuring, managing and reducing GHG emissions from internal air travel builds on the practical experiences of the PSSI firms, offers suggestions on how to identify and collect the data needed, and how best to convert those data into a carbon footprint and develop strategies to reduce GHG emissions.

The PSSI Founding Members

The Initiative was formed by a cross-section of professional services firms in the UK who believe there is an urgent need to develop new and longer-term policies and approaches for tackling sustainability challenges.
